Classroom on the World: Human Trafficking: Washington’s Hidden Problem

Wednesday, February 15, 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Bates Technical College Auditorium
Entrance off Earnest Brazill St, between 11th and 13th., Tacoma, WA

Human trafficking—both forced labor and sex trafficking—is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world today. This form of modern day slavery is tied with arms as the second largest international criminal industry behind drug dealing. Washington State, for various reasons, has become a hub of this activity. What can you do to be vigilant to its presence? Who can you contact in the community for information? How can you help individuals at risk?

Join Kathleen Morris,  Program Manager with Washington Anti-Trafficking Response Network (WARN), Seth Kirby, Director of OASIS, Pierce County’s support center for lesbian and gay youth, Ashley Metzger, Detective with the Special Investigations Unit of the Tacoma Police Department, and Dani Geissinger-Rodarte, Victim-witness Specialist with the FBI’s Innocence Lost Task Force, as they address this issue and discuss the problem, at-risk populations, legal implications and support services available, among other topics.

This promises to be an important and compelling program, and we hope you’ll join us.

Fees:
$20 for teachers – includes 3 clock hours, teaching resources and buffet dinner
$5 for general public
Complimentary for students and WACT Members

Our Thirsty Planet: 2012 Wang Symposium

February 23, 4:00 p.m. - 8:45 p.m., & February 24, 9:15 a.m.- 4:15 p.m.
Pacific Lutheran University
12180 Park Avenue South, Tacoma, WA 98447

This year’s symposium at PLU addresses the theme of water–a resourse we are over-exploiting and over-using and yet the very resource upon which we must depend to survive.

The biennial international symposium at PLU is one of the ways the Wang Center for Global Education supports the university’s goal of being an ever more globally focused university. Through presentations by professionals, hands-on practitioners, authors and academics, the symposium is designed to stimulate serious thinking on the largely invisible global challenges posed by our most precious resource — water. The 2012 Symposium keynote speakers are Maude Barlow and Terje Tvedt.

Seminar: Complying with U.S. Export Controls

June 14 & 15, 2012, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Holiday Inn, Sea-Tac International Airport, 17338 International Boulevard, Sea-Tac, WA

This two-day program is led by BIS’s professional counseling staff and provides an in-depth examination of the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). The program will cover the information exporters need to know in order to comply with U.S. export control requirements on commercial goods. We will focus on what items and activities are subject to the EAR; steps to take to determine the export licensing requirements for your item; how to determine your export control classification number (ECCN); when you can export or re-export without applying for a license; export clearance procedures and record keeping requirements; Export Management System (EMS) concepts; and real life examples in applying this information.

Presenters will conduct a number of “hands-on” exercises that will prepare you to apply the regulations to your own company’s export activities. This program is well suited for those who need a comprehensive understanding of their obligations under the EAR.

Fees: $445
